Tubakia Leaf Spot: The Oak Leaf Speckler

Tubakia leaf spot is a common fungal disease that affects many species of oak trees, particularly during periods of warm, wet weather. While often considered more cosmetic than life-threatening, repeated infections can contribute to stress and reduced vigor in susceptible trees.

Symptoms typically appear as small brown to reddish spots on leaves that gradually enlarge over time. Many lesions develop dark centers with lighter halos, giving the foliage a scorched or blotchy appearance. In severe cases, premature leaf drop may occur by mid to late summer. Young or stressed trees are generally more vulnerable to heavy infections.

The fungus spreads through spores dispersed by rain splash and moisture. Extended periods of humidity and poor air circulation within dense canopies can increase disease pressure.
